1705605737 THE DEPICTION OF GODDESSES: “GIRSL CAVE” OF THE VILLAGE OF YEDISALKIM IN VAN

Caves have the characteristic of being shelters for people for thousands of years in the last ice age. So, caves are the place where the universal fears show up and also the people of this age lived and increased in this place, but most important, they became the first place where people revealed their creative emotions whether its purpose is magic or not. The people who painted on the cave walls must have drawn their pictures with a very different aim and opinion in contrast with today’s painters. It is possible to think that painting here is a specialized field because it is not much possible that an ordinary person from cave people who spends most of his/her time hunting could paint these types of pictures. It is essential to see the painter-magician here as the first specialized person of history. The people of this age who used rocks or cave walls for painting painted these pictures by scraping, drawing and dyeing, long before the invention of the materials such as canvas and paper. Especially Neolithic Age is important in terms of presenting the first trails of a transfiguration process which shows different perspectives and roles in Goddess belief. It is thought that the Goddess, encountered for the first time in this era and sitting on her throne representing the basis of iconography that will last for thousands of years, represents a matriarchal community structure and the predatory animals next to her represent to rule over the animals and nature. In this context, it is aimed to discuss the Goddess’ specialty of ruling over animals with the title of “The Depiction of Goddesses: “Girls Cave” of the Village of Yedisalkım in Van”. Girls Cave is located in the western of Yedisalkım Village, which is situated in 76 km southeast of Van. Painted pictures were found in four of the more than 50 caves discovered by Oktay Belli in Yedisalkım Village in the year 1971. According to these researches conducted, it is estimated that the paintings in the Girls Cave were painted between 10.000 and 7.000 BC. These descriptions which show up as God and Goddess give substantial information about the beliefs of people who lived in that age.
